Ireland: A Global Hub For Aircraft Leasing
The TBA was delighted to welcome the current MBA class and TBA members to a special masterclass on Wednesday 27th April 2016 in the Trinity Business School, TBSI.
The Masterclass was given by David Swan, COO at SMBC Aviation Capital.
His engaging lecture was entitled “Ireland: A Global Hub For Aircraft Leasing”. He began by going back to the 1970s and contextualizing aircraft leasing in Ireland. There are currently 3,000 and growing direct and indirect employees in the aircraft leasing industry and David spoke about why Ireland is a a centre for aviation excellence.
The class was followed by a lively Q&A and subsequently a networking reception.

SMBC Aviation Capital (“SMBC-AC”) was created in 2012 following the acquisition of RBS Aviation Capital by a consortium of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (“SMFG”) and Sumitomo Corporation. David continued as Chief Operating Officer & Executive Director following the acquisition.
SMBC-AC is the 3rd largest aircraft lessor in the world with a leasing portfolio and order book of over 600 aircraft with lessees in over 40 countries worldwide. SMBC-AC has a strong trading culture and has traded over 300 aircraft and spare engines since 2005, as such SMBC-AC has one of the youngest fleets in the market. Further details on www.smbc.aero.
Prior to the acquisition, David had been with RBS Aviation Capital since its inception, originally responsible for Airline Marketing in the Europe, Middle East & Africa region. David was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2004 and joined the Board of Directors in 2007. David has ultimate responsibility for running SMBC AC’s Operating Platform along with the Risk & Asset Management of the company’s $10bn global aircraft leasing business.
With over 23 years of aviation industry experience, David has also held various international banking roles as Asia-Pacific Regional Head & Global Head of Aviation Finance and was based in Hong Kong for five years establishing and leading an aircraft and project finance business. David was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (www.ISTAT.org) in 2011 and has represented RBS/SMBC AC at the Aviation Working Group (www.AWG.aero) since 2004.
David holds an Honors Degree in International Business & Economics from Trinity College Dublin and has completed various Executive Management Programs at Harvard and London Business Schools.
